It was one of those perfect mornings in southern Ohio. The air was cold a crisp and just a slight breeze was blowing. My girlfriend and I had gotten into our two stand setup about 35 minutes before first light. We settled in and waited patiently for the sun to rise. By about 6:45am there was plenty of good light and the woods started to come alive. The sun hadn’t even been up for 10 minutes when I caught movement to my left. I slowly turned my head to see a large bodied deer approaching. I wasn’t able to see any antlers though my girlfriend did. She excitedly whispered "Its a big buck". Not long after I was able to see the antlers and saw they were good sized but I had no idea how big he really was.
After about 5 minutes of feeding the buck finally offered a shot. It was one of the most difficult shots I have ever made as I had an opening the size of a dinner plate to shoot through. I slowly drew, settled my pin behind his shoulder and squeezed my release, hitting my mark. The buck kicked his legs and ran off. I gave it 15 minutes before I went to retrieve my arrow. Much to my excitement it was covered in bright red blood and I knew the deer was down. I gave it another 15 minutes and went tracking.
I was blown away by what I saw when I got to him. He was a 14 point non-typical that green scored at 145 7/8 inches. I shot him with my PSE Bow Madness, Carbon Force Radial X-Weave arrows, g5 100-grain Striker broadheads. I couldn’t be more proud. The experience was even better because my girlfriend was there to share the moment.
