Scouting for Mule Deer in Colorado

Scouting for Mule Deer in Colorado

Danny Farris and Curt Price are scouting for mule deer in Colorado.

Prehunt scouting is critical to success in most types of bowhunting. But scouting for mule deer is especially critical. The animals live in big, open country that seems to be void of cover. It's not. Slight depressions, hidden canyons -- all can add up to great hiding areas for big mule deer bucks and you'll need plenty of time behind your optics to find them.

To speed up the process, Farris and Price employ Browning trail cameras to scout around the clock and for a long period of time. The long battery life proves invaluable as the cameras are able to work for weeks without powering down. Pre-hunt shooting is an often-overlooked aspect of the scouting process. The pair take some time to shoot at Block targets at varying ranges to ensure their scouting efforts don't go unrewarded when a shot opportunity presents itself.
