Monster Ohio Whitetail Could be Top 20 Typical

Stevens' buckYou’re looking at one of the biggest backyard bucks ever killed with a bow.

Ohio bowhunter Ronnie Stevens shot this 11-point typical after spotting it several days earlier in a bean field near a Columbus suburb, a kill that could find its way into the top 20 in the Boone & Crockett record books.

According to Field & Stream, Stevens first spotted the buck in a field while driving home from his kid’s volleyball practice. After securing permission from nearby homes, Stevens set up trail cameras. Within a week, he had the buck of a lifetime. The buck green grossed 196 inches with a net score of 189.

  • Steve

Great job, and a great lesson in ethical, responsible hunting to set an example for the young hunters. Out here in southern CA we just dream about deer like that.

  • Ken

Awesome deer Ronnie! Congradulations, that deer looks like he's been around for awhile. He's avoided a lot of other hunters, good job. And Steve, I'm from Iowa, where there are deer like Ronnie's, and we also dream about deer like that.

  • leslie S

I just hpoe you do not waste the carcus as the meat would be good eating it would also make good jerky anybody got recipes for eating venison

    • Razor

The secret to eating Venison is yellow mustard. I use french's. I smoked a shoulder using the same recipe for a brisket that used mustard and season salt. Every one that taste it says they dont believe it is deer meat, because it doesnt have a gamie taste. The wood I use is hickory and the season salt is kroger brand season salt and i cover it completely. smoke for 6 hours until temp reaches (in the thickest part of meat) 180 and then shred with a fork. The mustard taste is not present at all is the funny thing. Try it and enjoy, remember that everything taste better when smoked.

  • winston

Never saw a buck like that, I live in central Oklahoma. Thats an awesome deer dude… congrats.

    • Brad Walker

Awsome buck Ron, congrats. I took a buck in 2008 that netted over 150. I feel Ohio does not get the recognition that it deserves as a trophy state which is good in a way cuz that means people stay out of there and leaves more bucks for those ofus that do know its potential.

  • Stacy

That's what I love about Ohio, big bucks and men who can't spell! Congrats and I hope your mount turns out fabulous. I would love to have that on my wall!

    • Jen

Ditto, Stacy! I was about to break out my decoder ring to decipher some of these entries! Praying for a safe and tag filling season for all! Oh, and congrats Ron! He's magnificent!

I shot a deer in Ohio that has an unofficial green gross score of 208 1/4 how do I contact who is the right person to contact for official scoring

  • Douglas Donovan

If you have nothing better to do than show your jelously than maybe you should find another sport. As a bowhunter you have a lot of more important things to worry about. Bowhunting is all about being one with Nature and when you get there you will know it, so enjoy! As a true Bowhunter we can share with this bowhunters sucess becuase we have been there at the moment of truth. The best feedback comes from the best hunters and the pride that all Ohio hunters feel by seeing this fine Buck taken in thier home state! If you want to be jelous do not come hunting with me, as a matter of fact dont go hunting at all!

  • Jeff

I run and operate a low pressure archery only outfittting service in west central Ohio and I'm blowed away each year with all the great bucks that get harvested in our state. Obviously we are all doing something right and our DNR is doing things right as well. If you want big bucks in your state let em walk and don't allow a rifle season during the peaks of your rut. Look at our seasi=ons and methods of allowable hunting and you'll soon see how fortunate we are. Lots of folks knock crossbows but I for one believe that they allow a lot of hunters that would normally only be gun hunters a chance to find out what all the hype is about in the archery world. I know a lot of hunters who have put up the shotgun and picked up the crossbow only to pick up compound soon there after. Great buck Ronnie! I can only imagine what is instore for my hunters this coming Fall…
