Deer Hunting in Iowa: A Cold November Sit Pays Off

Deer hunting in Iowa. Does it get any better?

Bowhunter TV Producer Danny Farris is in Iowa in November. There’s a skiff of snow on the ground and the temperatures are anything but balmy. The rut is on and the action is picking up.

Ferris is hunting a pinch-point — an ideal rut-time location — and the trail camera activity indicates numerous mature deer are working the area. The fact that the camera has only been in place for one day and captured so many buck images makes the decision of where to hunt an easy one for Farris.

After a grunting and rattling sequence, a solid buck is spotted and appears headed towards the stand location. The buck intercepts a doe on the way, however, and narrowly avoids a shot opportunity.

As soon as the pair are out of sight, however, another buck shows up on the scene. The whitetail, which boats sweeping main beams that nearly touch in the front, reads the script and marches in for a shot.

The hit looks good but is a bit high and the track turns out to be one of those roller-coaster affairs that makes bowhunting what it is. Patience and woodsmanship pay off in the end.
