Bow Review: APA Black Mamba Pro

A bow that is different — in a very good way.

Bow Review: APA Black Mamba Pro
In addition to excellent shooting performance, APA’s new Black Mamba Pro is loaded with useful features such as a built-in Tool Center and Carry Handle, multiple cam-tuning options and the Fang Riser for easily hanging your bow in a tree.

With the introduction of their stationary arrow rests in 2002, APA Archery was born and off to a great start. The company burst onto the bow making scene in 2005 with the single-cam Taipan, followed in short order by the original, dual-cam Black Mamba.

APA Founder and Owner Nibal Achkar has an unmistakable passion for his craft, and his entire team takes great pride in its products. Visit the APA website, watch the company’s videos and you will quickly learn the taglines “more than just a bow” and “we are not the same.” More importantly, when you pick up an APA bow, it becomes abundantly clear these are not just marketing slogans!

APA’s all-new Black Mamba Pro is absolutely loaded with useful features and technologies. The front-facing carry handle, Riser Fang, on-board Tool Center and snake head cutouts give the bow enhanced usability and instant brand recognition, while the Twin Flex Limbs and X1 Cam System bring the heat. This new rig features Pro Connect Technology, Micro Tune Technology, an optional Integrated Bow Winch and so much more.

Archery’s Multi-Tool

The Black Mamba Pro’s riser is home to tried-and-true features as well as a few recent additions. First, the riser structure is reflexed, machined out of aluminum and finished in one of 10 camouflage or solid-color options. This bow features APA’s Tool Center that consists of a carbide sharpener, nock wrench, cam-lock pin and broadhead wrench. The pin, which is part of APA’s Cam Lock Technology, allows the replacement of string and cables, tuning adjustments and accessory installation without the use of a bow press. Further, the pin fits into a recessed hole above the shelf and provides a center shot reference for arrow rest placement and tuning.

APA’s signature Riser Fang promotes the Mamba “look” while also creating a no-hassle bow hanger. A drilled and tapped hole between the fangs serves as a camera mount for direct attachment. APA sells a camera kit separately. APA’s patented Carry Handle is built into the riser’s forward-facing strut. It maintains the bow’s balance point and minimizes hand fatigue while also increasing riser stiffness and reducing hand shock.

Connected

APA’s Pro-Connect System consists of three components that provide efficient, solid and performance-enhancing connections. It starts with the Pro-Connect Sight mount that uses a recessed track that accepts most dovetail sights and brings the sight closer to the centerline of the bow for better balance. Next is the Pro-Connect Stabilizer mount that clamps down or releases with a simple twist of the stabilizer. It is employed on both front-mount positions and also includes a setscrew that can be used to lock the whole thing down. Finally, the Pro-Connect Sling (sold separately) uses an easy connect system that provides a confident connection and extreme ease of use.

Other notable riser-based connections include an Integrate-compatible dovetail arrow rest mount, direct-mount wrist sling, dual arrow rest mounting holes, a rear stabilizer mount, hex/triangle quiver mounts and a recessed bow winch (pull-up rope) mount.

There Is More!

To round out the riser package, there are several Mamba Head cutouts, a string dampener tipped with a Limbsaver dampener, Soft Touch Armour, Nock Point Alignment Zone lines on the riser and carry handle and a Hand Position Reference Groove on the grip’s front face, designed to encourage consistent hand position. The Torque Free Grip uses contouring, forward angle and wood side plates to create a neutral wrist position to minimize wrist strain and promote consistent hand positioning. The optional Integrated Bow Winch (sold separately), with its lockable spooling system, is used to hoist and lower the Black Mamba from elevated positions. APA’s Stability Control System employs mounting holes for 1-, 2- or 4-ounce weights on either side of the riser near the upper and lower limb pockets. This allows for a customized feel and balance at full draw. A short Stabilizer/Dampener unit comes mounted to the lower Pro-Connect stabilizer connection.

Power Plant

APA shift tune technology
It’s easy for shooters to tune the Black Mamba Pro without a bow press, thanks to Shift Tune technology that allows for cable yoke adjustments and Micro Tune technology built into the cable guard for finer adjustments once the yokes are located in the optimal position.

APA’s X1 Dual Cam System uses draw-length specific modules to cover the 24.5-30-inch draw-length range, in half-inch increments. The XS Torque Free modules are designed for easy tuning and optimal performance at every length. A Rotating Draw Stop (RDS) creates a solid back wall at every draw length. The company’s unique cable-management system employs the patented, adjustable Micro Tune Cable Guide — a simple way to advance or slow cam rotation for precision tuning/cam timing, with no tools or bow press required. Additionally, the Variable Yoke is designed to automatically settle into position for perfect cam alignment. APA’s Shift Tune Technology offers left or right yoke positioning options at the anchor point for tuning adjustments; Cam Lock Technology is required to make these adjustments.

Twin Flex Limbs are engineered to allow the forked section of each limb to flex, equally distributing the load across two working areas, thereby storing more energy. The limbs, available in peak draw weights of 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 pounds, are outfitted with Limbsaver dampeners and APA’s Torque-Free Limb Anchors that are designed, and perfectly placed, for tying in limb-driven, drop-away rests. The cams and limbs work together to generate an advertised IBO speed that can reach up to 360 fps.

At The Range

Saying this bow is loaded is truly an understatement. The test bow weighed less than 4 pounds, and while there was a notable jump in the handle at the shot, there was essentially no vibration. The small, flat back on the narrow grip proved effective in allowing consistent and comfortable hand positioning.

A remarkably smooth draw transitioned easily into the solid back wall, which followed a valley that was sufficiently wide to allow us to relax into the anchored position for aiming. At full draw, the Black Mamba Pro locked onto the bull’s-eye, and we subjectively deemed the Black Mamba Pro to be quiet at the shot (see noise meter results for an objective assessment).
