I've been a fan of Hunter Safety System harnesses since I started using them about five years ago. Not only are the vest-style harnesses extremely comfortable and super easy to put on (especially outside your truck in the dark), but they also incorporate convenient features such as pockets to store gear and built-in binocular straps.
Yet as much as I like the Hunter Safety System lineup, I have to admit there were times -- mostly on hot, early-season hunts -- when I chose to wear a more minimal safety harness that didn't add what amounts to an extra layer of clothing on the top half of my body. Apparently, I wasn't the only one, because Hunter Safety System this year introduced its new, 2.5-pound Ultra Lite harness, an all-black unit that offers the same structural design and materials as the company's original harnesses without the bulk.

The Ultra Light's sleek design appears similar to other, more basic harnesses, but it features padded chest, shoulder and back straps for added comfort and a slightly rigid structure that keeps the straps from tangling in storage or while you are trying to put it on. The Ultra Light also features Hunter Safety System's newest, rubber-coated leg strap buckles that are smaller and quieter than previous versions. I tested the Ultra Light on a recent Texas hunt and found it very comfortable, even in sweltering, 100-degree heat.
The Ultra Light would also be a great choice for pack-in backcountry excursions and late-season hunts when you want to minimize interference with heavy, insulated clothing. The Ultra Light comes with a Lineman's Climbing Strap and is compatible with all HSS accessories.
