Knowing the distance to a big game or whitetail target — or a 3-D target during a summer archery competition — is vital to a hunter's success.

Be just a little off in your range estimates and the result can be a poor shot, something that can cause a clean miss at best and a wounded animal at worst.

Because of that, laser rangefinders have become an indispensable part of the hunter's equipment list in recent years, able to help a shot find its way into the boiler room or the 10-ring.

Problem is, sometimes those rangefinders can be costly acquisitions, yet another George Washington crunching piece of gear that some are tempted to scrimp on or do without altogether.

That's where Halo Optics new XL600 Rangefinder comes in, an economical yet high quality unit packed with top-notch features including +/- accuracy to a single yard out to a range of 600-yards on reflective targets. What's more, with versatile magnification of 6X, the result is a bright and clear view along with fast target acquisition out in the field.

Add in the unit's easy-to-read internal LCD display of the XL600's reticle, battery status, mode setting, numerical display, and unit of measure (hunters can select either yards or meters), and the result is a top-shelf product that won't break the bank.

According to Halo, the XL600 unit operates in dual modes, including Standard Mode, which provides a single precise distance reading through the push of a single button. Meanwhile, the unit's Scan Mode enables hunters to range multiple targets in quick order, all without having to reactivate the laser for each target.

With the XL600's Angle Intelligence (AI) technology, the unit detects and compensates for the degree of slope a hunter is facing, regardless of what mode setting is being utilized. The result is a tough, water resistant unit with a comfortable and ergonomically correct grip that provides accurate "shoots like" readings whatever the terrain being hunted.

With a MSRP of $119.99, the Halo XL600 runs off a single CR2 lithium ion battery (included with the rangefinder) and is covered by a one-year warranty.

The bottom line is that the Halo XL600 hits the sweet spot in an expanding line of laser rangefinders made by Halo Optics, all at a price tag that won't break the bank while providing a combination of performance and value that is hard to beat.
