Okay, I admit it. I'm a bit of a gear nut. However, survival is a pretty basic art and usually requires only a few simple tools. Still, a hunter can always find a way to make something faster, lighter, easier -- or all of the above. And I love doing that.
Carrying a Global Positioning System (GPS) unit is a good idea; using it is even better. Unfortunately, many hunters stow their GPS units in their backpacks and take them out infrequently, substantially reducing their potential for staying "found." Enter the Garmin Foretrex 201, a GPS unit worn on the wrist like a watch. This waterproof unit weighs just under 3 ounces. Because you don't have to take off your pack or rearrange your gear every time you want to use the GPS, you can stay "found" continuously with ease. An added bonus is the rechargeable lithium battery that will run up to 15 hours per charge. Suggested retail price is about $180
