Hunting Boot Selection is Critical: But Why?

Uncomfortable feet often end hunts early because of boot selection. Here's some advice and a trio of tried-and-true boots to improve your odds for success.

Hunting Boot Selection is Critical: But Why?

Boot selection is critical to ensuring comfort in the field. You'll have to consider what type of hunting you'll be doing, what the weather is going to be like, and what type of terrain you'll be hunting in.

The Rocky name is synonymous with success, and for this reason, legions of hunters put their trust in the brand each year. From quality clothing to the manufacturer's uber-impressive boot line, Rocky produces products that promise durability and undeniable comfort.

As hunters, we find ways to cut corners when it comes to gear. Why? Life is expensive and adulting, though it stinks, is a big part of life. One area, though, where corner-cutting is a strict no-no is your choice of boots. On a hunt, nothing is more important than your feet.

I've been on western deer hunts where guys and gals couldn't go anymore due to a nasty blister. Blisters are painful, and when they stay moist and continue to rub against the boot throughout the day, the pain can be excruciating. There is no quick fix for a nasty blister. Then, of course, are those times when Mother Nature is at her worst. It won't take long to realize that your low-quality budget boot was a terrible choice when your feet are wet and cold. Nothing is worse than wet, cold feet on a hunt. You'll be miserable, and the joy of the hunt will get sucked away.

Many deer goers, especially those that spend their season 20 feet up a hardwood, won't dare step on their coveted whitetail dirt without a rubber boot cloaking their feet. The right rubber boot will contain human stink, keep you dry, comfortable, and, arguably most important, warm. You can't move much in a treestand, and when the Mercury drops, frozen feet will send you high-tailing it for the house.

Enter Rocky!

Quality boots in various styles and options you can count on, Rocky boots are a solid choice for your deer and other big-game pursuits. Here are some top picks to consider.

MTN Stalker Realtree Edge 1,000G Insulated Boot

Rocky MTN Stalker Realtree Edge Camo 1,000G Insulated

There is no terrain too rugged or weather front too fierce for Rocky’s MTN Stalker. A 10-inch boot cloaked in Realtree Edge, this full-grain leather warrior is an excellent choice for any venture. The 1200 denier nylon is extra tough, and a rugged 7mm lug outsole with a lightweight EVA midsole provides superior traction blended with flexibility. Comfort, via the EnergyBed LX footbed with memory foam, lets you wander and far as your heart desires. Those willing to wander off the beaten path typically punch tags, and these boots are tailor-made for adventure hunting in far-flung locales. In typical Rocky fashion, good, when it came to building these boots, wasn’t enough. A fiberglass shank was added for additional support and durability, which will be greatly appreciated when toting a pack full of venison over daunting terrain. When it comes to keeping the feet dry, these hikers are supreme. Rocky’s VP Waterproof technology keeps moisture out without trapping sweat inside. MSRP: $200

MTN Stalker Mossy Oak 1,400G Insulated Boot

Another member of the Stalker line, this boot was explicitly created for those hunts when snow, ice, and sub-zero temps are the norm. Fitted with all the same features found in the MTN Stalker 1,000G, this model provides an additional 400 grams of 3M Thinsulate ultra insulation. Overkill? Not at all. Some of the best hunts happen late in the season when deer and other critters must get up out of their beds and find food. The problem with these types of late-season forays is movement can be unpredictable. You never know when a big brute is going to hit the closest groceries. If you can’t stay out in the elements, your chances of success shrink drastically. MSRP: $236

XRB 1,000G Insulated Rubber Boot

Rocky XRB 1,000 Insulated Rubber Boot

A top-end rubber boot you can depend on all season, the XRB is a whitetail hunter's dream come true. Not only will the boot keep you from spreading a game-spooking line of human odor, but it will also keep you warm with, dry, and ultra-comfortable with its Dri-Blaze Thermal Insulation, which is equivalent to 800 to 1,000 grams. The 7mm neoprene shaft features a 3D molded TPU overlay for extra durability. Have you ever been crossing a beaver dam to access your favorite kill tree and put a pointy stick right through your rubbers or damaged them climbing up a tree with glass-like bark? This design helps reduce damage and boosts longevity. These boots will heed the hunting call season after season. The Comfort Cushion on the interior heel ups stability and ensures a custom fit and feel. Standing 16 inches tall, the XRB’s keep water and debris out, and the adjustable gusset makes for easy on/off and allows the boots to fit over any calf, even those covered with bulky clothing. MSRP: $186

There you have it, a top-notch trio that will meet the demands of any hunt, anywhere, anytime. Plus, they don't break the bank. How can you beat that? For more information, visit rockyboots.com.
