First on my list is the new Swarovski EL 42 Swarovision binos. I've used the original EL's for years in Alaska and all over the Lower 48, and I was convinced they were the best. But with the new EL 8.5x42 Swarovision ($2,598) and 10x42 ($2,754) models, Swarovski has made dramatic improvements over the originals. Most notable are the High Definition (HD) lenses. These fluoride-containing lenses minimize color fringing so they transmit razor-sharp images with significant improvements in resolution and contrast.

Swarovski also increased the eye relief to help eyeglass wearers. The new optimized lens coating enhances precise color reproduction. And the Field Flattener lenses provide a really crisp image right to the edge of the field of view. With these binos mounted on a tripod, I found this feature to be particularly helpful in discerning minute details throughout the entire field of view without repositioning the tripod/bino.Finally, the new Swarovisions have been physically redesigned, featuring an elegant yet functional grip that improves the feel.
